When Allegra disappears, Lane who loves her cousin dearly returns to Roanoke, to track her down. Talking through a mouthful of stale Cheerios drowned in just-this-side-of-sour milk. My reluctant answer is - yes, more for Ms. Engels writing than her description thankfully not graphic of what goes on in the House of Horrors.
I loved the portions of the story outside the Roanoke estate, the description of life in Osage Flats, of Tommy and Cooper, and their relationship with the two girls, of life in very small town America. Don't have a Kindle? It is very easy to shock the reader with something so grotesque, but - in my view - it is not a of a very creative writer. How Lane solves the mystery, and how, with Lane, the tortorous cycle finally comes to an end, forms the rest of the story.
. Has she left of her own accord, has she committed suicide after learning she is pregnant or is there a more sinister reason for her disappearance? It is a moneyed, priveledged lifestyle that these girls lead in Roanoke, yet each one of them rejects this life. In my dream it stood tall and stately, tucked among a forest of spring-green trees. In the end, we either run or we die.
